Franklin County has agreed to
bid for the right to host the 2015 Dixie Youth State baseball Tournament at the
Will Kendrick Sports Complex in carrabelle.
The
Dixie youth program will make a bid for the tournament on January the 24th.
If
Franklin County is chosen the tournament would be held in July.
The
tournament would include the triple-A and Ozone Division which are the top tier
baseball divisions.
The
tournaments can be pricey for the county – the county has to pay about 1200
dollars per division plus various other costs including overtime pay for county
workers and the costs of a tournament banquet.
About
26 teams would take part if the county gets both divisions.
The
county hosted the girls state tournament a few years ago which cost the county
about 35 thousand dollars.
But
as commissioner Pinki Jackel pointed out, the county as a whole makes money
because the tournaments bring hundreds of players, coaches and family members
to the county and they spend thousands of dollars on rooms, food and other expenses.
Commissioner
Cheryl Sanders added that some of the costs could also be defrayed by getting
more private sponsorship.
