The Florida State University Coastal & Marine Lab Conservation Lecture Series ALL YOU EVER WANTED TO KNOW ABOUT SHARK SEX -- BUT WERE AFRAID TO ASK A Presentation by Scientist DR. JOSE CASTRO Sharks are one of the most successful groups of vertebrates and have outcompeted many other marine predators for eons, evolving into the dominant predators in the sea today. The evolutionary success of sharks is due in part to their diverse reproductive adaptations that differ from most bony fishes, specifically internal fertilization and viviparity (live bearing). In this lecture, I will cover the diverse reproductive adaptations and strategies of sharks. I will discuss how sharks mate, how they nourish their young, their reproductive cycles, and many more interesting aspects of the reproductive biology of sharks. Clemson University) is a well-respected scientist and author who worked for the United Nations Food and Agriculture Organization before becoming a fisheries biologist for the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA). He wrote the most comprehensive book of sharks on the market, "The Sharks of North America,"  published by the Oxford University Press, with illustrations by the remarkable Florida artist, Diane Rome Peebles.
