Volunteers needed to fill bags with oyster shells on Friday

The Apalachicola National Estuarine Research Reserve is looking for volunteers to help fill mesh bags with oyster shells this Friday morning.
The bagged shells will be used to build a breakwater that will protect the shoreline near the historic Marshall House on Little St. George Island by calming the wave action that erodes the shoreline.
The Marshall House is an early 1900’s Florida homestead
The Research Reserve plans to restore the house back to its original state and then open it to the public as a living museum.
The oyster bag breakwater is just one of the ways the Reserve is working to protect the Marshall House.
The Reserve will also plant a living shoreline to re-establish a vegetative buffer on the shoreline.
Living Shorelines use a combination of coastal native vegetation for sediment stabilization and breakwaters constructed of oyster shells, limestone rock, or other structures conducive to the natural environment.
If you want to help with the oyster shell bagging, make sure to be at Scipio Creek in Apalachicola at 9 o’clock Friday morning, the bagging should last till about noon.
Please wear closed toed shoes, bring sunscreen, a hat, and a bottle or cup to drink from.
The Research reserve will provide the gloves, shovels, and water.
