20 tons of creosote pilings removed from Little St. George Island

About 20 tons of old creosote pilings were recently removed from Little St. George Island.

The 1940 era creosote pilings were a part of Government Dock, a structure of historical significance, which has been rebuilt after many years of weather related damage.

The cleanup project was a cooperative effort between the Apalachicola National Estuarine Research Reserve, the University of Florida, the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration, and local contractors.

The partnership allowed the research reserve to remove the piling from the island and dispose of them properly.

Tommy Ward, owner of 13 Mile Seafood, provided hands-on assistance as well as a boat, barge and tractor to unload the pilings once they were brought to Apalachicola.

The project was funded through the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration’s Marine Debris Program.
