County Commissioners are putting
Florida Probation Services and its predecessor, Judicial Correction Services on
notice that they plan to seek restitution of 218 thousand dollars stolen by an
employee of the companies.
The board agreed last week to
notify the companies of their plans and to request an independent audit of
Florida Probation Services.
The county currently has its own
audit being done for the clerk’s office and could seek more money if the
auditors find more is missing.
The independent audit for Florida
Probation Services was recommended by the state attorney’s office.
The company collects probation payments
for local misdemeanor cases.
Jennifer Brown of Apalachicola
was sentenced in February to nearly 2 years in prison and 20 years probation
for pocketing 218 thousand dollars
in probation payments that should have gone to the court system.
She did this over a period of
nearly 5 years while working for both companies.
In March the county extended its
contract with Florida Probation services, and at the time the company agreed to have an external
audit done every year to make sure that this type of crime doesn’t happen
again.
Commissioners
said they don’t know if an external audit is the same as an independent audit
but they want to follow the recommendation of the state attorney’s office.
