Elderly Michigan man drowns off St. George Island

A visitor from Michigan drowned Wednesday while swimming in the Gulf of St. George Island.

The man's name is being withheld until all next of kin have been contacted.

The sheriff’s department was called at 4:30 Wednesday to respond to the incident.

When they arrived on scene the man had already been pulled from the water by people on the beach.

The victim was a 75 year old white male from Michigan who was out on a body board enjoying the water.

When two men noticed that he was face down, floating in the water they swam out and pulled him out of the water onto the beach.

One of the men called 911.

St. George Island First Responders arrived moments after the 911 call was placed and immediately started CPR on the man.

CPR was continued with the assistance of Deputy Hamm and Deputy Ward until emergency medical services arrived.

Paramedics continued medical attention until 5:00pm, when he was pronounced deceased on scene.

The victim was then taken to Kelley’s Funeral Home in Apalachicola.
