Franklin County is preparing to
host two large youth sporting events this summer.
The county has been selected to
host the 2015 Dixie Youth Girls’ softball district tournament which
begins on June the 19th.
It will also host the Dixie Youth
State baseball Tournament which begins July the 17th.
Both tournaments will be held at
the Will Kendrick Sports Complex in Carrabelle.
Franklin County and the local Tourist
Development Council are helping fund the cost of the events – the price went up
a little bit this week when the board agreed to spend an additional thousand
dollars to house the umpires for the events.
Commissioners say the costs are outweighed
by the benefit the events have for the local economy.
The tournaments will bring dozens
of teams and hundreds of people to the county – the baseball tournament alone will
include about 400 players along with their coaches, family members, and other
supporters.
In the past, tournaments held at
the Will Kendrick Sports Complex have filled up all of the hotel rooms and
rental homes in the Carrabelle area and spilled over to other areas of the
county and even into Crawfordville.
