Franklin
County Commissioners last week signed a contract with a company called
Berkshire Johnstone out of Pensacola for renovations to the historic Fort
Coombs Armory in Apalachicola.
The contract is for over 862
thousand dollars.
The money for the renovations is coming mainly through
a state grant and from the Franklin county Tourist Development Council.
The renovations include installing about 40 tons of
air conditioning in the building and remediating issues with lead based paint.
The county is also seeking additional grant money to
renovate the kitchen in the armory, repair some doors on the building and do
some sidewalk and drainage repairs.
When all of the work is complete the 114 year old Armory
will be used as a local convention center as well as a destination for private
events like weddings
