The Franklin county Commission got some good news
recently about the roof repair work on the Historic Chapman building in
Apalachicola.
The
Chapman building is the northernmost example of art deco in the state of
Florida; a study by the University of Florida called it one of the 11 most
endangered historic buildings in the state.
Franklin
County received a $50,000 Historic Preservation Grant to repair the roof over
the auditorium but found out after the grant had been awarded that the structural
integrity of the roof might have been compromised; and the county did not have
grant money to cover the additional repairs.
The
board agreed to set aside 50 thousand dollars in county money in case more of
the roof decking needed to be replaced.
Turns out the roof
decking is cypress and in really good shape so the project is coming in on
budget and the county won’t have to use its 50 thousand dollar fund on that
project.
