Lanark Village recycling center shut down indefinitely

County commissioners have agreed to close the recycling center in Lanark Village temporarily because of illegal dumping there.
Commissioners said that people have been using the site to dump household trash and worse, and that’s leading to problems with wild animals foraging the site for food.
Lanark Village resident Barbara Roehr said there are also problems with the smell – and it just makes the community look bad.
Commissioners said people even come from Wakulla County to throw trash there.
Commissioners voted to close the Lanark Village recycling site indefinitely while the solid waste department figures out how to deal with the problem.
They have discussed installing cameras at the site.
Commissioners have also discussed mandatory garbage pickup around the county – but have not yet taken any action on that proposal.
Even with the Lanark Village recycling area closed, there are still a number of locations where people can recycle in Franklin County.
Franklin County residents can recycle cardboard, newspaper, plastic, aluminum, tin & glass at Vrooman Park in Eastpoint; in Alligator Point the recycling bins are on Bald point Road.
There are also recycling bins at St. James Bay.

In Carrabelle you can recycle at Gray Avenue at the old Carrabelle High School; on St. George Island the recycling bins are behind Harry A’s and in Apalachicola the recycling location is on Commerce Street.
