Two areas of the Apalachicola Bay will reopen to oyster
harvesting on Wednesday.
The
Florida Department of Agriculture will reopen area 1611 and 1622 at sunrise
Wednesday.
Area
1611 is the Approved Winter West area of the bay –
area 1622 is the conditionally approved winter west area of the bay.
Area 1622 has been
closed since mid-November because of heavy rains and high river levels, 1611
was closed last week because of elevated fecal coliform also caused by heavy
rains.
Water samples taken
from both areas show the waters are once again suitable for oyster harvesting.
Oystermen can get
daily bay status updates on the internet at www.FloridaAquaculture.com under
the shellfish harvesting tab.
You can also hear a
detailed pre-recorded message of open and closed shellfish harvest areas 24
hours a day by calling 653-8317.
