Job Description
Conduct all aspects of the Fisheries-Independent Monitoring (FIM) program with emphasis on directing and executing statistically valid research surveys in both offshore marine and nearshore estuarine waters to evaluate the relative stock abundance, occurrence, diversity and condition of Florida’s marine and brackish water fish populations. Coordinate and conduct fisheries-independent sampling efforts following strict protocols which include research cruise planning and preparation, offshore and nearshore field sampling, and data entry and management. Responsible for maintaining and repairing sampling gear including boats, motors, trailers, nets, protective gear, office equipment, and electronic equipment as needed. Operate side scan sonar equipment to characterize bottom habitat composition and complexity, including high relief, natural hard bottom and artificial reefs. Complete fish and invertebrate identifications following strict QA/QC protocols using a microscope and video equipment. Assist in the processing and management of side-scan sonar and video data following defined procedures. Perform routine summaries of data generated from above studies and assist in preparing technical and scientific reports, oral presentations, and/or manuscripts based on fisheries independent monitoring results/analysis. Perform and participate in public outreach efforts as appropriate. Participate in other multidisciplinary fisheries research efforts across all FWRI-FIM field laboratories as required. Perform other related work as required. This position requires extensive offshore field work with numerous days at sea every month and the ability to perform strenuous physical activities on an offshore research vessel for long periods of time, including heavy lifting.
Minimum Requirements
A bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university with a major in one of the biological sciences.
Preferred Experience
Applicants with the following experience may be given preference: Experience using underwater electronics such as side-scan sonar, ROVs, video, and/or still cameras. Experience with fish traps and working offshore. Experience operating hydro acoustic instrumentation. Experience identifying fish/invertebrates on video and still images. Basic ArcGIS mapping experience.
Knowledge, Skill(s), and Abilities
Ability to participate in offshore research cruises for up to 14 consecutive days. Ability to conduct biological research using scientific methods. Ability to identify juvenile and adult fishes and invertebrates of Florida. Ability to perform strenuous physical activities under arduous conditions (e.g. inclement weather, rough water, boat engine exhaust, shoreline wading) for long periods of time, including heavy lifting. Knowledge of principles and techniques used in fisheries research, including methods used for gathering and managing fisheries data. Knowledge of Florida’s offshore and nearshore bottom habitats. Ability to safely operate and maintain vehicles and small boats and motors. Ability to perform quantitative analysis on scientific data using various software packages (i.e., SAS, ArcGIS, R, Excel). Ability to communicate effectively, both orally and written, in professional and public settings. Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with co-workers and the public. Skill in the use of fish sampling equipment (i.e., trawls, seines, traps, sonar), computers and related software (i.e., Microsoft Office Suite), and laboratory equipment (i.e., microscopes). Ability to work hours in excess of 40 hours per week, maintain a valid driver's license, and complete a boater safety course.
