Area 1611 closing to oyster harvesting after red tide found in water samples

Area 1611 of the Apalachicola Bay will close at sunset today.
Area 1611 is the approved Winter Shellfish Harvesting Area – it is being closed as a precaution because of the possible presence of red tide.
Red tide was found in pretty high concentrations from a water sample taken at Indian Pass.
There have also been reports of fish kills near Indian Pass beach.
Water samples will continue to be collected and analyzed for the area until managers are sure the water is safe for oyster harvesting.
Red Tide is a organism that in large enough concentrations releases a neurotoxin that can kill fish and even affect humans.

It was last seen in Franklin County in 2005, when it closed the Apalachicola bay to oyster harvesting for nearly 6 months.
