Franklin
County’s monkey has been seen again, this time in Eastpoint.
A rhesus monkey or monkeys have been traveling around Franklin
County since December.
A monkey was first reported on November the 18th near
Crawfordville – monkeys have since been spotted in Carrabelle, Lanark Village,
Panacea, and now Eastpoint.
The Eastpoint sightings have been around North and South
Bayshore Drives.
Rhesus monkeys are not native to Florida or even to the US –
they are found in South, Central and Southeast
Asia.
There are colonies of them in central and south Florida from
monkeys that have escaped captivity.
FWC said if you should spot the monkey, please note the
location – preferably with GPS – and report it to them immediately.
That way they have a better chance of capturing it.
Do not go near the monkey.
Rhesus monkeys can be aggressive and can carry diseases that
are dangerous to humans including Herpes B.
FWC is asking that any sightings of the monkey be reported
to their 24-hour Wildlife Alert Hotline 888-404-3922.
