Patriot's Day Celebration
No need to wait until the Fourth of July to express your patriotism.

The fourth Patriot's Day celebration in Apalachicola not only features one of America's premier war and foreign correspondents as guest speaker, but a book signing and Cajun cookout as well. The event will be held on Saturday, April 30 from 9:30 a.m. until 2 p.m. at Veteran's Memorial Plaza, the home of the Three Servicemen, Detail, Statue.

Guest Speaker Joe Galloway is the co-author of "We Were Soldiers Once-And Young" which was made into a critically acclaimed movie starring Mel Gibson. The Bronze Star recipient is the only civilian during the Vietnam War to have been awarded a medal of valor, after rescuing wounded soldiers under fire during the Ia Drang Battle.

"Just wait until you hear him speak," said Patriot's Day organizer and Gold Star Widow Linda George. "He uses no notes. He doesn't write anything down. Everything is extemporaneous."

Galloway not only served four tours as a war correspondent in Vietnam but rode with the 24th Infantry in Desert Shield/Desert Storm and made trips to Iraq to cover the war in 2003 and 2005-2006. He worked for 15 years covering foreign postingsThe late Gen. H. Normal Schwarzkopf called him "the finest combat correspondent of our generation-a soldier's reporter and a soldier's friend."

Organizer and U.S. Army veteran Jimmy Mosconis said the event is held in order to honor all veterans and active duty service members as well as to raise funds for the upkeep and maintenance of the Three Servicemen, Detail, Statue. Mosconis spearheaded the Three Servicemen Statue South nonprofit organization which raised more than $1 million to have the monument made and brought to Apalachicola.

Galloway will be signing copies of his book on Friday, April 29th from 3 to 5 p.m. at Downtown Books in Apalachicola and on the day of the event at the Plaza beginning at 9:30 a.m. The ceremony will begin at 11 a.m. and the cookout at 12 noon. Three Servicemen, Detail hats and t-shirts will be on sale and brick pavers will be available for purchase by those who would like to have a paver installed at the park to honor a veteran or loved one.

Proceeds from the event and the book sales will be used for the upkeep and maintenance of the Three Servicemen, Detail, Statue and Veteran's Memorial Plaza. The Plaza is located at 230 Market Street in Apalachicola. For more information, contact Mosconis at850-653-6044 or visit the website atwww.threeservicemenstatuesouth.org.
