County staff are worried about
running out of room for vendors at the public beach on St. George Island.
Commissioners
this week approved an emergency moratorium on new peddlers’ licenses for St.
George Island.
The
moratorium will be in effect for 6 months – during that time the county will review
the ordinance and gather information on ways to tighten the language so the
county has more control over who and how many people are eligible for the
licenses.
The
county created the peddlers’ ordinance to keep unlicensed peddlers from setting up shop and to control where
licensed peddlers can operate.
County
staff, however, says that the demand for the licenses has skyrocketed, and they
have concerns that there may not be enough room for everybody.
They
said that close to 15 people have already applied for the licenses and there
are requests for even more.
They
are also concerned that the wrong types of vendors are setting up.
The
county envisioned that the permits would allow seafood and boiled peanuts and
other agricultural items to be sold but instead they are seeing a growing
number of clothing and merchandise businesses seeking the permits.
Permits
that have already been issued will be allowed, but no new licenses will be
issued.
