Franklin County approves rezoning that could allow RV park on St. George Island

County Commissioners last week agreed to rezone a piece of property that could allow an RV park to be built at the foot of the St. George Island Bridge.

Commissioners agreed 4 to 1 to rezone 12 lots along Franklin Boulevard from c-2 commercial business to c-3 commercial recreational which allows for campgrounds.

Property owner Walter Armistead said he already has approval from the county health department to install an aerobic septic system for 13 units on the site.

Not everyone is happy about the idea of campers on the island; residents pointed out a number of potential issues, including increased traffic in the area and the problem of having RVs slowing down evacuations.

It was also noted that it might impact people’s opinions of the island if the first thing they see coming off the bridge is an RV park.

Supporters pointed out that similar parks in Eastpoint and Carrabelle are doing very well and the park will have the potential to increase the number of visitors who can stay on the island.

The rezoning was recommended by the county planning and zoning board.

District 1 commissioner Rick Watson said there are still a number of steps before the project becomes a reality including more trips to the county P&Z and the county commission for site plan approval.
