Franklin County rezones El's Court property for use as a public park

Franklin County agreed this week to rezone about 7 acres of commercial property east of Carrabelle that once held a hotel.

Commissioners agreed to rezone the old El’s court property from commercial to preservation.

The new zoning will allow the county to move forward on plans to develop the land as a public park.

The county purchased the property from Capital city Bank last year to provide more water access and to protect the property from development.

The property includes about 2 and a half acres south of Highway 98 along the water and about 5 acres north of Highway 98.

The county is seeking funding now to add some amenities to the property including improved parking as well as an elevated boardwalk and kayak launches.
