Franklin county commissioners have agreed to hold off on approving any
changes to the county’s animal control ordinance while the county attorney
considers new state rules that took effect on July the 1st.
The county commission plans to update the 20 year old ordinance to
bring it into compliance with current state law.
As part of the update the county also plans to create an interlocal
agreement with the cities of Carrabelle and Apalachicola so the county animal
control department can operate within the city limits.
The animal control ordinance was last changed in 2006.
County attorney Michael Shuler said a new law that took effect this
month changes the manner in which dogs that are considered dangerous should be
confined, and that wording needs to be added to the county rule.
The public hearing for the updated animal control ordinance will likely
be held in August.
