Pregnant women in Florida can now
get tested for the Zika virus for free at all county health departments.
Gov. Rick Scott made the announcement on Wednesday.
Zika is a viral disease that is spread mostly by the bite of
an infected Aedes species mosquito.
These mosquitoes are aggressive daytime biters. They can
also bite at night.
While most Zika cases carry mild flu-like symptoms, the
disease can be passed from a pregnant woman to her fetus which can
lead to certain birth defects.
If you are pregnant and would like to be tested for Zika,
just stop by your local health department.
You don’t have to make an appointment.
The heath departments are open from 8 till 5 Monday through
Friday.
And remember, you can help stop the spread of the disease by
stopping the mosquitoes that carries the virus.
The Mosquito that spreads the zika virus is Aedes Eegypti
and they only live in artificial containers.
The mosquitoes lay their eggs in standing water, so get rid
of the standing water around your home.
Standing water can be anywhere like flower pots, birdbaths,
buckets, barrels, and cans.
You should also clean out your rain gutters and remove any
discarded tires and other items that can collect water.
And if you have any mosquito concerns, contact Franklin
County Mosquito control at 670- 8730.
