Franklin County seeks grant to make garbage cans bear resistant

Franklin County can soon help Eastpoint residents who are having a problem with black bears getting in their garbage.

The county has applied for a grant to provide retrofit kits to residents that will make their garbage containers bear poof.

Waste Pro also provides bear proof garbage cans to customers, and they do work, but they also cost a few dollars more a month than regular cans.

According to County coordinator Michael Moron, the retrofit kits will not add costs to monthly trash bills and are relatively easy to install.

The retrofit systems will be provided mainly in Eastpoint.

The county is applying for a separate grant for Lanark Village.

This is the time of year that Florida’s black bears really start eating in preparation of winter and they will go anywhere they think they can find easy food and garbage cans aren't the only problem.

Other steps to keep bears from stopping at your house include feeding your animals in a closed off area and not leaving dog food outside.

And there are always a few people who think its fun to actively feed bears, but in the long run that bad for the bear.

Bears are naturally shy, but if they lose their fear of humans the state will have to step in and either relocate the bear or in some cases euthanize it.

And it can be bad for the person doing the feeding because its illegal in Florida to leave out food or garbage that will attract bears and cause human-bear conflicts.

And remember if you have a nuisance bear or suspect that someone is feeding or attracting bears, please call the FWC’s Wildlife Alert Hotline at 1-888-404-FWCC.
