Hurricane Michael Update #6

An Update From Denise
Day 8... Signs of recovery are everywhere. The generosity of so many to our coast is nothing short of amazing. We certainly are NOT “Forgotten.”   My tireless staff has been surprised by those who have remembered that we are all hands on deck and brought us Girl Scout cookies, Chick -Fil-A sandwiches and food from Mangia 850! A representative from FAIA even brought us gasoline and ice!

Most of our claims seem to be from surge and the National Flood Insurance Program (NFIP) and the private programs that mirror those coverages, are policies developed for catastrophic events to protect buildings. Some of the things that are damaged…and are messy and costly to repair and replace….are not covered in the Federally dictated program. Flood policies are always separate from the wind and homeowners policies because they are a federal program with rates….and coverages…based on the zone and structure that are the same across the US. We live here, too, and our policies are no different than those we write for our customers. Storm clean up is beastly, smelly and costly and falls on the property owner to navigate.

Adjusters are here in great numbers as you can imagine. Our folks who had total losses and those without a home to stay in are getting priority….as they should. Many contractors are in the area and, sad to say, we have had reports of some price gauging that should be reported to the Fraud Hotline.

There is a lot of help here but it is somewhat disorganized. The Apalachicola Airport looks like a Military Base with all the trucks and machinery out there. The reality has set in that we have survived a catastrophic event. However, there is also a spirit of camaraderie that we will “come back”.

Kids will go back to school in Franklin County next week and Gulf County on November 5th. Neighboring counties are still to be determined. The Eastpoint Post Office was flooded so our Mail Carriers are under a tent with big bins distributing mail.

Folks, this has been THE BIG ONE.

Office Hours

8a to 4p EST tomorrow, October 19, 2018

8a to 4p EST next week, Monday - Friday

Our office will be closed this weekend, October 20-21, 2018. You can continue to contact your carriers directly to submit your First Notice of Loss.

At this time the preferred method of contact for any non-urgent questions/ concerns is by email. Emails will not be monitored over the weekend. Please do not assume any claim to be filed until you hear from us indicating such.

When emailing, please only send your email to one of us to avoid duplicate responses.
Contractor Recommendations

We are fortunate to have many great contractors in the Florida Panhandle! We are not able to give specific recommendations for a contractor for remediation and repairs. The Franklin and Gulf County Building Departments can provide a list of contractors licensed in our area.  You can also search the FL Department of Business and Professional Regulation for individuals licensed to serve your particular need. Additionally, you can contact the area Chamber of Commerce.
Adjuster Contact

Adjusters are working diligently to make first contact with our impacted customers. There will be a delay in hearing from adjusters with the large volume of claims reported with this storm. Please, be patient!

You do not have to be at the home when the adjuster visits. The adjuster will need access to the interior and exterior of your home. You can have a neighbor, friend, secondary caregiver, property management company, etc. accompany the adjuster to your home.

Do not make any permanent repairs to the home prior to meeting with the adjuster(s).

From Gov. Scott:
Disaster Relief Employment Available to Floridians Impacted by Hurricane Michael

Governor Rick Scott announced that Florida has been awarded federal National Dislocated Worker Grants to provide temporary employment to Floridians affected by Hurricane Michael. The federal National Dislocated Worker Grant, administered by the Florida Department of Economic Opportunity (DEO), provides disaster relief employment in the form of temporary jobs that support storm response and recovery efforts.
