Highlights

United States and Canada Work to Reduce North Atlantic Right Whale Mortalities, Serious Injuries

Assistant Administrator Chris Oliver recently participated in a meeting with Canadian officials focused on the conservation and management efforts for the endangered North Atlantic right whale. The United States and Canada have a shared interest in recovering right whales, and it is critical for both countries to take and sustain additional efforts to reduce right whale mortalities and serious injuries.

Improvements to Recreational Fishing Data

In 2020, the Marine Recreational Information Program will prioritize the tactics that will help us continue to produce high-quality recreational fishing statistics, from conducting research to explore potential survey improvements to publishing baseline standards for survey design, data quality, and information management.

2020 Aquaculture Funding Opportunity: Addressing Economic and Market Needs of the U.S. Aquaculture Industry

Sea Grant anticipates approximately $5,000,000 will be available for research projects and programs that will significantly advance the understanding of the economics of aquaculture businesses in the U.S. and address gaps regarding important market information. The overall goal is to advance business management towards development of a sustainable marine and Great Lakes aquaculture industry in the U.S. Successful proposals will address geographic and/or topical needs and will fully integrate research, extension, and education.

New Abundance Estimate for Endangered Cook Inlet Beluga Whales

NOAA Fisheries released the biennial abundance estimate for endangered Cook Inlet beluga whales. Scientists estimate that the population size is between 250 and 317—smaller and declining more quickly than previously thought.

“Blob” Research Reveals Environmental Effects That Shut Down Fishing and Hiked Whale Entanglements

An ecological pileup of unprecedented changes in the ocean off the West Coast beginning about 2014 led to record entanglements of humpbacks and other whales. New research shows this put the region’s most valuable commercial fishery at risk.

Florida Man Sentenced for Killing Endangered Sawfish

After a joint investigation by NOAA Fisheries and the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission, a judge sentences a commercial fisherman to 2 years of probation, 80 hours of community service, and a $2,000 fine for killing an endangered smalltooth sawfish.

Proposed Rule to Replace Historical Captain Permits with Standard Federal Charter/Headboat Permits in the Gulf of Mexico - Open for Comment

Framework Adjustment 6 to the Atlantic Herring Fishery Management Plan - Open for Comment

NOAA Fisheries is proposing Framework Adjustment 6 to the Atlantic Herring Fishery Management Plan. This action would set specifications for the herring fishery for 2020 to 2021. The proposed specifications would reduce catch limits for 2020 and 2021 in response to estimates of herring biomass and recruitment.

Changes to Commercial Regulations for Snapper-Grouper Species in Federal Waters of the South Atlantic Region

NOAA Fisheries announces the final rule for Vision Blueprint Commercial Regulatory Amendment 27 to the Fishery Management Plan for the Snapper-Grouper Fishery of the South Atlantic Region.  The final rule will modify regulations and commercial fishing seasons, trip limits, and minimum size limits.
