The Franklin County commission on Tuesday recognized the local ambulance service for its recent award of the EMS Provider of the Year by the Florida Department of Health

The Franklin County commission on Tuesday recognized the local ambulance service for its recent award of the EMS Provider of the Year by the Florida Department of Health.

The annual award recognizes an EMS provider that has assumed a leadership role in the Florida EMS system and community and has demonstrated outstanding initiative in public education or training.

The award was given last month at a statewide conference in Orlando and accepted by Richard Lewis, EMS Director for Franklin County’s Ambulance Service.

David Walker, CEO of Weems Memorial Hospital, was joined by 7 members of the EMS staff at Tuesday's county Commission meeting.

Walker said the award recognizes the local Emergency Medical team for being at the forefront of the community paramedic program while supporting the Department of Health and the Franklin emergency management program during the COVID pandemic.

It also recognizes their outstanding initiative for placing defibrillators at the county courthouse and for providing CPR training throughout the year.

The award also recognizes EMS for excellence in the areas of quality assurance and medical control protocol implementation by the addition of a telemedicine program.

David Walker said it is outstanding that groups from the 66 other counties in Florida recognized what the Franklin County EMS staff is doing here in our community.

EMS Director Richard Lewis thanked the commission and the hospital for all of the support they have provided allowing the EMS to improve so much over the past three years and with continued support hopes to improve more and continue to make the county proud.
