Apalachicola Main Street was awarded a Secretary of State award for the historical exhibit “Journey to Freedom: The Odyssey of Abolitionist Moses Roper."
The exhibit was shown in 2021 at the Apalachicola Center for History, Culture and Art and told the story of Moses Roper, an enslaved Floridian whose journey to freedom led him to England where he received a degree and became a fierce abolitionist who lectured across Europe.
After premiering in Apalachicola, the exhibit was placed on loan to the Arsenal Museum in Chattahoochee.
The exhibit will return to Apalachicola later this month before moving to the R.A. Gray Building in Tallahassee for a six-month exhibition.
The Secretary of State Award was announced in August during the Preservation on Main Street Conference in DeLand.
The annual awards program recognizes the innovative projects, people, organizations, and businesses in Florida’s 57 Main Street communities.
