The Franklin County Sheriff’s Office is warning residents about an ongoing phone scam.
The Sheriff’s Office has received several reports of a caller identifying themselves as someone that works at the Sherriff’s Office and informs the victim that they have a warrant for their arrest.
The caller is very convincing and says that the victim can avoid arrest by making some kind of payment.
Do NOT provide any payment information and do not purchase preloaded cards to send.
The sheriff’s Office would never call and demand payment to prevent an arrest.
The scammer may even have a local telephone number and the call may seem very authentic, but scammers can ‘spoof’ numbers so they appear to be from the local sheriff’s office or agency,
Remember, never provide personal information over the phone.
Never send money or provide credit card or online account information to anyone you do not know.
If you get a call like this, just hang up.
