The state of Florida says it doesn’t plan to build any new boat ramps at Alligator Harbor, which has Franklin County Commissioners a little upset.

In 2020, the County Commission asked that the state build a better boat ramp at Alligator Harbor to help out the clam and oyster aquaculture projects there.

The consensus among the state agencies is that Franklin County is responsible for providing any boat ramp improvements at the existing locations of Leonard’s Landing or Sun ‘N Sand Boulevard.

Franklin County Commissioners believe the state should provide the ramp as the state is the reason a new ramp is needed.

There are currently about 60 active leases in the harbor, and the oyster farmers are using whatever site they can find to get their boats in the water which sometimes puts them on private property or in locations where it is easy to get stuck or damage their boats.

And the problem is getting worse as the state continues to approve oyster leases for more people.

Commissioner Smokey Parrish said he wishes the state had dealt with the ramp issue before it began approving aquaculture leases so the county wouldn't be facing the problem now.

Commissioner say they will continue to press state agencies to get a boat ramp.
