Franklin County Commissioners on Tuesday presented a resolution of appreciation to County Planner Mark Curenton, who will retire from that position at the end of this month

Franklin County Commissioners on Tuesday presented a resolution of appreciation to County Planner Mark Curenton, who will retire from that position at the end of this month.

Curenton began working for Franklin County in 1988 as the assistant county planner, and took over the role as planner in 2016 after the retirement of Alan Pierce.

Pierce attended the ceremony to highlight many of Mark’s accomplishments over the years, which included drawing the base map for the county 911 system by hand.

He was also responsible for bringing tens of millions of dollars in grants to the county for everything from roads, to historic preservation to parks.

And while he wasn’t working, he was still very active in the community, serving on the Apalachicola Historical Society, the three servicemen statue committee and the Franklin County soil and water conservation board.

Commissioners said he will truly be missed and they will have a very difficult time replacing him.

County staff are working on interim solutions to cover Mr. Curenton’s duties.

County staff has found a consultant who will be able to assume the responsibility of Department of Transportation grants immediately, and said they are working on a contract with the Apalachee Regional Planning council to provide a planning consultant who should be able to cover many of Mark’s other responsibilities.
