The Tourist Development Council
was recently awarded a 188-thousand-dollar historic preservation grant in the
amount for the exhibits needed for the Maritime Heritage Museum at the Buddy
Ward Seafood Landing Park.
The money will allow various vendors to complete the necessary
exhibits, historical research and displays for the museum.
The groups working on the project include the Apalachicola Bay
Chamber of Commerce, the Franklin’s Promise Coalition, Coastal E. Solutions and
Bay Media along with Forgotten Coast TV.
Their work should be complete by the end of September.
Work on the museum is expected to be complete by the end of
the year.
Planning for the project began in 2015.
The museum requires converting
an old shucking house in Apalachicola into an interactive museum of the history
of the local seafood industry.
The interior has been restored
to resemble its original use an oyster shucking plant, complete with individual
shucking “stalls” and a refrigeration room.
The exhibits, once complete,
will cover Franklin County’s maritime history from cotton and lumber to
seafood.
Visitors to the museum will be
able to watch videos on the oyster, shrimping, crabbing and fishing industry.
