Biden-Harris Administration Announces More Than $9 Million for Partnerships to Recover North Atlantic Right Whales

NOAA Fisheries announced more than $9 million from Inflation Reduction Act funds to support strategic partnerships aimed at improving fishing gear and population monitoring that will help the recovery of North Atlantic right whales.

The Biden-Harris Administration announced more than $34 million in funding for grants, cooperative institutes, contracts and federal employment to modernize NOAA Fisheries' data, infrastructure, and workforce. This effort aims to meet the pace of climate-related mission demands and is a key component of President Biden's Investing in America agenda.

NOAA to Host Virtual Public Meeting in Advance of International Whaling Commission Meeting

NOAA will host a virtual public meeting on August 26, 2024, at 3 p.m. ET in advance of the upcoming 69th meeting of the International Whaling Commission. Any U.S. citizen interested in U.S. whale conservation and management policy may participate and share their views. If you would like to attend, please register in advance.

The report summarizes a two-part workshop series focused on Aquaculture Opportunity Area spatial planning in Alaska state waters.

West Coast

Reestablishing Connections for Fish and Tribes on Oregon’s North Santiam River

With $710,000 in funding from NOAA, the Confederated Tribes of the Grand Ronde will remove barriers to the passage of threatened salmon and trout species on their land.

All That Remains: Severe Decline in Wild Elkhorn Coral Genetic Diversity on Florida’s Reefs

NOAA Fisheries published results of the 2023 marine heatwave’s impacts on elkhorn coral genetic diversity in Florida. According to the report, only 23 percent of known genotypes remain in the wild.

New England/Mid-Atlantic
