All About Cold Stunned Sea Turtles from the Gulf Specimen Marine Lab

All About Cold Stun Sea Turtles!

Cold Stun Season!

Cold Stunning is a phenomenon in which sea turtles, especially species like the Loggerhead and Green Turtle, experience physiological distress due to a drop in water temperature. This happens when ocean temperatures fall below a certain threshold, usually around 50°F (10°C). Cold stunning can be particularly dangerous for sea turtles because they are ectothermic (cold-blooded), meaning their body temperature is regulated by the surrounding environment.

What We Do

Once a cold-stun turtle is in our care at the Lab, we start by warming it up with towels and blankets until it starts moving again. Next, we move them to large tanks, where they are watched to make sure they are swimming and breathing well. They are photographed, documented, and given an ID number. Once the ocean water temperature rises, we release the turtles back where they were found!

What To Do If You See a Cold Stun Turtle

If you fund a Sea Turtle that seems distressed, please call us. Call us at (850)-984-5297 or call the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission at 1-888-404-3922. You can stay with the Turtle till someone is dispatched to your location.
