Hundreds attend Forgotten Coast Lighthouse Challenge

Last weekend’s Lighthouse challenge is being called a big success.

The St. George Lighthouse Association said that more than 400 lighthouse enthusiasts participated in the event by climbing or visiting our four local lighthouses at Cape San Blas, Cape St. George, Crooked River, and St. Marks. Climbers came from as far away as Montana and Vermont and braved gusty winds on Saturday and the threat of rain for the first part of Sunday to “meet the Challenge.”

Their efforts were rewarded with colorful Lighthouse Challenge tote bags and magnets with photos of each lighthouse visited. Those who visited all four lighthouses also received an “I Survived the Forgotten Coast Lighthouse Challenge” button, and received Certificates of Completion from the Florida Lighthouse Association. Several dozen participants also left with prizes raffled at the lighthouses, ranging from a four-foot solar lighthouse at Cape San Blas, a child’s quilt at Crooked River, handmade jewelry at Cape St. George, and lighthouse photographs at St. Marks.

Miss Florida USA 2010, Megan Clementi of Orlando, and Miss Emerald Coast Teen USA, Cassie McFarland of Crawfordville, joined climbers at St. Marks, Crooked River, and Cape St. George on Saturday. They were met by a number of other local title holders and “Little Misses” as they completed the Challenge at Cape San Blas on Sunday.

Clementi and McFarland were among the 160 supporters of the Cape St. George Light at the “After the Climb Bash” at Sometimes It’s Hotter Seasoning Company on St. George Island Saturday night. The event brought in more than $1500 to be used toward completion of the Keeper’s House Museum next to the lighthouse.
