54 thousand square miles of the Gulf of Mexico are now closed to fishing

Over 54 thousand square miles of the Gulf of Mexico are now closed to fishing because of the Deepwater Horizon oil spill which continues to pump oil into the Gulf.

The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration on Tuesday shut down fishing in over 22 percent of the federal waters of the Gulf of Mexico. That's up from about 48 thousand square miles last week. The closure extends from Louisiana to just south of Pensacola and well out into the Gulf of Mexico.

The closures are designed to keep fishermen from catching seafood potentially impacted by the ongoing oil spill. The federal and state governments also continue to test and monitor seafood safety to keep oiled products out of the marketplace.
