The cost of handling Franklin County’s trash actually dropped a little last year.
Solid waste director Van Johnson said disposing and recycling of local trash cost just over 1.7 million dollars during the 2008-2009 fiscal year – a drop of almost 200 thousand dollars from 2007. It’s about as much as we spent in 2006.
The numbers were released as part of the solid waste management annual report, which includes the total cost of operating the landfill including indirect costs like legal fees.
The report does not take into account how much of the cost is covered by the county as opposed to how much is covered by state and federal grants or by using inmate labor.
