Franklin County Tourist Development Council begins 50 thousand dollar emergency advertising campaign

Franklin County commissioners have agreed to allow the Franklin County Tourist Development Council to take 50 thousand dollars from its reserve account to use for an immediate marketing campaign.

The Tourist Development Council is currently working to bring tourists to the area by advertising the fact that Franklin County’s beaches are unaffected by the ongoing oil spill in the Gulf of Mexico. There is a great concern that even if the oil does not move to our area that the tourist season could still be hurt because of the perception that oil is on the shore.

The TDC said the advertising campaign will be directed at areas where many of our tourists have come from in the past like Georgia and Alabama and it will begin very soon.

Franklin County’s tourist season historically begins this month and tends to end in late July and early August as people return to school.

The county has also requested that Franklin County be added to the list of county’s eligible to apply for part of the 25 million dollars that BP provided to the state of Florida for advertising. Currently the money is available to areas between Pensacola and Gulf County, so commissioners agreed to send a letter to the Governor’s office asking that Franklin County be added to the list. That would provide additional money for advertising and would allow the TDC to replace the 50 thousand dollars from its reserves which might be needed later in the summer in case our area is affected by a hurricane.
