More federal waters in Gulf of Mexico closed because of oil spill

The area of the Gulf of Mexico closed to fishing because of the ongoing oil spill has been expanded to cover a larger area and has been extended until May the 17th.

NOAA originally closed about 3 percent of Gulf of Mexico federal waters to all fishing on April the 30th. The closed area reached from east of the Mississippi River to just west of Pensacola Bay and represented about 3 percent of the Gulf of Mexico federal waters.

As of Friday the closed area was extended a little further west and further into the Gulf and now represents about 4 and a half percent Gulf of Mexico federal waters.

The original 10 day closure was also extended for an additional 10 days till May the 17th.

Federal and state governments continue to test and monitor seafood safety in the Gulf – so far no beaches or fishing areas in Florida have been affected by the oil spill.
