2010 was a miserable year for Florida manatees

Just when you thought 2010 couldn’t get any worse for manatee, a cold snap in December killed off even more of the animals.
By early December, 2010 had already the record for the most number of manatees killed in state waters in one year.
Nearly 700 manatees died in Florida waters by early December, that number has since increased to 767.
That’s more than double the average over the past 5 years.
Cold weather caused many of the deaths.
There were 279 documented cases of cold stress.
Of these cold-related deaths, 244 occurred in the early part of the year and 35 occurred in December.
In addition, it is likely the cold temperatures contributed to many of the 214 deaths in the “undetermined” category and the 68 deaths in the “unrecovered” category.
