BP has paid out nearly 1.3 billion dollars to Florida because of the Deepwater Horizon oil spill.
The company released payment and investment numbers on Tuesday that show the payments through December the 31st.The vast majority of the money has been paid out in directly to businesses and individuals taking part in the claims process.
So far BP has paid over 1.1 billion dollars in claims in the Sunshine State.
The company has also spent over 73 million dollars on the Vessel of Opportunity Program, and $66.6 million dollars for oil cleanup and removal.
That cleanup work continues, as crews continue to monitor Florida beaches and clean up any oil they find.
Another $32 million dollars went to Florida’s tourism industry including the Franklin County Tourist Development Council.
In 2011, BP says it will continue to fund scientific research in the Gulf to determine the long-term impacts of the Deepwater Horizon spill.
BP established a $500 million research fund immediately after the spill called the Gulf of Mexico Research Initiative.
In 2010, BP granted $10 million from that fund to the University of South Florida Institute Of Oceanography.
BP has also committed another $20 million dollars to the state to pay for seafood testing and marketing.
