Franklin County to consider redistricting this year

County officials and the school board will soon be saddled with the responsibility of redrawing Franklin County's voting districts.
Now that the National Census is complete, and local census numbers are expected to be released sometime this spring, elected officials will have to view the county's population figures and decide whether the current voting districts need to be changed.
Generally the board tries to have no larger than a 3 percent difference in population between its 5 districts.
The County commission said last week it would like to begin the process as soon as the census numbers are out.
Under Florida law changes in school board districts can only be made during odd numbered years and the county and the school board try to redistrict at the same time to insure that the district lines remain the same for county and school board members,.
If the district lines were different it would be more expensive to prepare ballots for local elections and more confusing for voters.
Commissioners Cheryl Sanders pointed out that the state legislature will also have to redistrict this year and it’s her hope that Franklin County will fall under one legislative district after the process.
Currently the county’s two legislative districts are separated by the Apalachicola river and she said she does not like to see Franklin County divided.
