Demolition of the St. George Island bridge began in 2005 and next week the Department of Transportation plans to finish the job.
DOT has announced that beginning next Monday crews will begin removing a number of pilings from the old bridge which are now posing a hazard to boaters.
The pilings were supposed to have been removed when the bridge was demolished 6 years ago; instead they were broken off just below the waterline.
The danger area extends north and south from the old causeway – the area has been marked so that boaters steer clear.
The contractor will have 100 days to complete the project – the state will pay over 355 thousand dollars for the work.
DOT says there will be no traffic delays on the bridge; all of the work will take place from a barge in the Bay.
