Health officials around the
country are becoming more concerned about West
Nile Virus from mosquitoes.
So far in
2012, 43 states have reported West
Nile virus
infections in people, birds, or mosquitoes.
A total of 693
cases of West Nile virus disease in people, including 26 deaths,
have been reported to the Center for Disease Control.
West Nile virus is carried by mosquitoes
and health officials are warning Flori dians
to protect themselves with bug spray, particularly at dusk and dawn when
mosquitoes feed most actively.
Symptoms of the disease include headache,
fever, fatigue, dizziness, weakness and confusion.
Many infected people recover from
infection, but it can be dangerous particularly for children and elderly
people.
In some cases, the virus can cause a fatal
swelling of the brain.
