Franklin County extends the date by which county workers have to use their vacation time

Franklin County commissioners have agreed to extend the date by which county workers can use their vacation time before they lose it.

The board agreed Tuesday that county workers can have until the last day of February to use their vacation time.

Before the vote the cut-off date was December the 31st.

Commissioners felt many county workers would be happy with the extension because it runs through the end of hunting season.

The action was taken at the request of County solid waste director Fonda Davis who said he is having a problem staffing the solid waste department because many of his workers want to take their vacations around the holidays.

The extension is only in effect for this year, while the county considers long-term options which could include allowing workers to take pay in lieu of vacation time.

Commissioners said they need to see how that plan would impact the budget.

The board said the time extension should take care of the immediate problem while they consider all of their options.
