~First Storm of the Season Serves as a Reminder to Remain Prepared During Hurricane Season ~
TALLAHASSEE, Fla. – Tropical Storm Arthur, the first named storm of the 2014 Hurricane Season, has formed just off of Florida’s Atlantic Coast. The storm is anticipated to track northward toward the Carolinas as it strengthens, and forecasts say it will have minimal impacts for Florida.
Governor Rick Scott said, “We’re monitoring Arthur’s development and are staying in close communications with leaders on the ground should they need support. This event serves as an important reminder to all Florida families and visitors that hurricane season is here, and it is important that we remain vigilant and have a plan for protecting our families, our homes and our businesses. Families must get a plan and make sure they’re stocked up on critical storm supplies so our communities are prepared for the worst.”
Though Arthur is anticipated to have minimal impacts to Florida, tropical storm watches are in effect from Volusia to St. Lucie counties. Gusty winds of up to 50 miles per hour are forecast, and rainfall totals of 1-3 inches, with localized totals of up to 5 inches along the coastal portion of east central Florida are also expected.
Floridians are encouraged to monitor local broadcasts for updated weather conditions as the storm continues to develop.
The Atlantic Hurricane Season runs from June 1 – November 30.
