This is an OPS position that does not provide moving expenses. This position is grant funded and employment is based on grant renewals.
WHAT IS OPS EMPLOYMENT? Other Personal Services (OPS) employment is a temporary employer/employee relationship used solely for accomplishing short term or intermittent tasks. OPS are at-will employees and are subject to actions such as pay changes, changes to work assignment and terminations at the recommendation of the employer.

Job Description:
This position will serve as the field and laboratory leader of a team responsible for carefully following established protocols to conduct scallop research for FWRI. Responsibilities and duties include, but are not limited to:
Participating in monthly and quarterly field sampling efforts which involves:
  • Ÿscheduling and initiating field work;
  • Ÿconstruction, maintenance and deployment of various field sampling gear;
  • Ÿcaptaining research vessels with a crew of 3-5 people;
  • Ÿsample collection, processing, dissection and preservation;
  • Ÿensuring safety protocols are followed while on the boat and, in particular, while conducting benthic population surveys using SCUBA;
  • Ÿoverseeing and delegating maintenance of equipment, vehicles, vessels and trailers;
Participating in processing laboratory samples which involves:
  • Ÿensuring live animals and time-sensitive samples are preserved or processed in a timely manner;
  • ensuring sampling and quality assurance / quality control protocols are followed;
  • conducting chemical and biochemical analyses including safe handling of a variety of chemicals;
  • safe handling of both live and preserved specimens;
  • microscopic analysis of histological slides and specimens;
Data management which involves:
  • Ÿensuring data is entered and proofed in a timely manner;
  • preparing summary reports with descriptive statistics and graphs in advance of deadlines;
  • assisting with data analysis and interpretation;
  • assisting with preparation of quarterly, annual and final reports and scientific publications;
Administrative duties which include:
  • providing clear, timely and effective updates to supervisor;
  • purchasing necessary supplies and equipment for project while adhering to purchasing protocols;
  • completing travel documents;
  • submitting timesheets;
Ability to interact with multiple project partners on a frequent basis, and capable of establishing and maintaining professional working relationships
This position will involve prolonged, intensive field work in adverse and physically challenging conditions. Field work will occur year-round and will require effective time management to balance field sampling with laboratory and office duties as they pertain to research goals. Laboratory work will often be repetitive and tedious and the successful applicant will be required to process samples in varied states of decay.
The incumbent will be required drive state vehicles courteously and safely and trailer research vessels up to 25’ in length to and from research sites, a minimum of 400 miles per month. SCUBA diving will be a necessary component of field work and will require the employee to obtain an AAUS scientific diving certification within 6 months of employment and to maintain CPR, First Aid and Oxygen Administration certifications.
This position involves extensive travel during all months of the year, including frequent overnights and occasional weekends. Field days often reach or exceed 12 hours in duration and include multi-day field efforts that exceed the standard 40-hour work week. The incumbent will be required to pay lodging costs which will be reimbursed by the state.
Minimum Qualifications (must be listed on application): 
Ÿa completed Bachelor’s Degree from a Biological or Environmental studies program;
a minimum of 2 years paid work experience in a relevant marine-related, field-oriented position;
a minimum of 12 months paid work experience serving as a project leader of scientific field operations including vessel operation;
SCUBA certification from a nationally accredited organization (PADI, NAUI, etc.);
a valid driver’s license;
Preferred Qualifications: 
Applicants with the following KSAs detailed within the application or supporting documents will be given preferential treatment:
  • Ÿscientific experience working with molluscan species
  • extensive experience operating and trailering boats
  • a current or previous AAUS certification with logged scientific dives
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
Knowledge of:
  • principles and techniques used in scientific research;
  • laboratory procedures and practices associated with marine fisheries research;
  • familiarity with methods of data collection and laboratory and field preparations in support of marine fisheries research;
  • familiarity with basic laboratory methods such as weighing and measuring, tissue preparation and incubation, histological preservation and microscopy, species identification;
  • basic invertebrate biology;
Skill in:
  • trailering and operating research vessels up to 25’ in length;
  • collecting, organizing and storing scientific samples; 
  • use of scientific laboratory and field equipment; 
  • following written and verbal instructions with strong attention to detail;
  • use of Microsoft office programs including Excel and Word for data recording, entry and proofing;
  • use of other computer programs designed for statistical and graphical analysis;
  • swimming, snorkeling and SCUBA diving;
Ability to:
  • supervise work groups and lead field teams during scientific sampling
  • perform strenuous field duties in adverse conditions;
  • lift at least 50 lbs repeatedly over extended periods and over consecutive work days;
  • follow and adhere to standard operating protocols;
  • work effectively as part of a team or independently to accomplish research goals;
  • communicate effectively and diplomatically with stakeholders, peers and scientific groups;
  • flex work hours to accommodate field sampling efforts;
  • follow directions from project leaders outside the direct supervisory chain;
  • think logically and apply problem-solving techniques;
  • maintain a valid driver’s license;
