Persisitent red tide bloom seems to be fading

A persistent Red tide bloom seems to be dissipating from our area.
The most recent red tide report from the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission found only very low concentrations of red tide in two samples taken from around St. Joe Bay in Gulf County.
It was also found in background levels from 1 site in Bay County.
Red Tide has not been seen in Franklin county waters in a few weeks though there are still some areas of the bay closed to oyster harvesting because of a red tide bloom in mid-December.
Two areas of the bay are closed; the conditionally approved winter west 2 area 1622 and the approved winter west area 1611.

The Department of Agriculture continues to take water samples from the closed areas – but can only reopen the areas once the oyster meat itself has been tested to make sure that there is no red tide toxin left in the oysters.
