Tiny houses are becoming more and more popular around the country; there are even television shows dedicated to them.
But they are not legal in Franklin County.
Tiny houses tend to be less than 500 square feet and they are popular with people trying to downsize.
The typical American home is over 2000 square feet and that can be a lot of upkeep and expense for single and retired people.
Earlier this month the Franklin County commission was addressed by Darren Turner, whose daughter wants to build a tiny house in the county.
They were rejected because the county rules require that single family homes be at least 1000 square feet.
That rule has been in effect for over 30 years.
Mister Turner said the way he looks at it is a house is a house – it doesn’t matter if its 1000 square feet or 300 square feet.
County attorney Michael Shuler said he will investigate how other counties are dealing with the issue so the board can continue the discussion at a future meeting.
