Fishery Management Council to hold hearings on gag and red grouper fishing

The Gulf of Mexico Fishery Management Council will hold a series of public scoping meetings in January to get public input on a proposal to address the recent findings that gag grouper is both overfished and undergoing overfishing. The proposal will also address the decline in the red grouper stock.

Potential actions for discussion include: establishing a rebuilding plan for gag grouper and revising annual catch limits and annual catch targets for gag and red grouper. The council will also address bycatch issues and recreational data collection and monitoring programs.

The public is welcome to attend the meetings and suggest other actions for management or data collection that are not listed in the scoping document. The closest meeting to our area will be on Thursday, January the 14th at the Boardwalk in Panama City.
