U.S. Congressman Allen Boyd is asking that BP provide more emergency advertising money to Florida to promote tourism and to ensure that the funding is sent directly to North Florida communities.
The Congressman is also urging BP to create a Panhandle Advertising and Tourism Council to oversee the distribution of the money.
Earlier this summer, BP had provided $25 million to support a statewide advertising campaign to boost Florida tourism; that money was allocated directly to the state and distributed to counties through the Governor’s office.
Congressman Boyd said many North Florida counties did not see any of the funding.
Florida Governor Charlie Crist has now made a request for a second payment of 25 million dollars; that request was rejected by BP, but government officials are pushing hard to get that money.
Congressman Boyd has issued a letter to BP saying that the company should provide the additional advertising funds and this time work more closely with local communities by ensuring that the next round of advertising dollars goes directly to local counties.
Boyd said he feels it would be best to create a council comprised of local elected officials, business leaders and county tourism councils to tribute the money to the areas where its most needed.
