Franklin County Commissioners are opposing a rate increase by the St. George Island water company.
Water Management Services has a filed a request with the Public Service Commission to increase its water operating revenues by nearly 650 thousand dollars.
The water company said it needs to increase rates to make up for a loss of water consumption caused by the increased use of shallow water wells on St. George Island and the decrease in revenue because of the drop in tourism on the island.
Water Management Services says without the rate increase it will face a nearly 250 thousand dollar shortfall next year.
County Commissioners said that this is the wrong time to add and financial burdens to residents on St. George Island and agreed to file a motion with the Public Service Commission opposing the rate increase.
