Apalachicola to join Florida Mainstreet program

An organizational meeting will be held in Apalachicola today to begin the process of establishing a Florida Mainstreet Program in the city.

The Florida Mainstreet program is operated through the Florida Division of Historical Resources.

The program is designed to revitalize historic towns and requires that participating cities hire a full-time downtown manager, establish a Main Street Board with representatives from the public and private sectors, and develop a local program to bring about revitalization of the traditional commercial core.

The community is responsible for raising the funding necessary to staff and administer the program.

Currently over 40 cities in Florida take part in the program including Panama City, Marianna, Blountstown and Perry.

To be successful the program requires support from residents and the business community and the city would like to see how much support there is for the plan so they are asking Apalachicola residents and business owners to come out tonight to learn more azbout the program.

The first organizational meeting will be held this afternoon at 6 p.m. at the Apalachicola Community Center at Battery Park.

The meeting is being hosted by Historic Apalachicola, Inc. a non-profit organization working with the City to implement the Florida Main Street Program in Apalachicola.
